America's Religious Boom in the 1950's. What Happened?
This week I read an article titled “In ‘God’ We Trusted” about religion in America during the 1950s. Church membership, Sunday school attendance, Bible distribution, and church construction were all at historic highs. Surveys showed that nearly 80% of Americans believed the Bible was the revealed Word of God.
Yet despite this outward religious growth, many lacked a true understanding of Scripture. In fact, half of those surveyed could not name even one of the four Gospels. The article described this as a religion without deep commitment or genuine life-changing faith — something that “skimmed the surface” rather than transformed the heart.
Those words are still relevant today. The Church is not simply a place of religious activity, but the Body of Christ called to worship, teach, fellowship, serve, and share the Gospel. The question for us is not whether we want to “bring back the good old days,” but whether we are truly living out a sincere and biblical faith.
